A Learning Log is a great way to reflect on and record your learning. Perhaps linked to your job, your schooling, or your personal development. I use the log whenever I learn a new skill or find a useful resource that I know I’ll want to reflect on at a later date. Perhaps I’ve found a tutorial about how to do something in Photoshop, or I’ve read an article about a topic I’m interested in, or I’ve been moved to action by a TED talk - all these things can be added to the learning log and tagged with themes to help you filter and track your learning entries.

Here are the features of my learning log:

Title: Give the log entry a memorable title that sums up its content

Date: I always record the date I did the learning. I record the date of the source separately.

Theme: I use tags to select a theme or themes that can be related to the learning, e.g. ‘Personal development’ or ‘Video editing’. Later you can create specific views tailored to the themes you are most interested in.

Learning source: This is where I state what my source is. Perhaps the name of a chapter, book and author, perhaps the title and maker of a YouTube video and the date is was published. You can create links within your Notion system, perhaps linking to your library.

Learning resources: This is where I might add a weblink, document, or photo.

What I learned: This is key. Summarise what it is that you learned. Reflect on it, what was the most important bit of information. You might have watched a whole video about using a piece of software but the key bit could be about how to do a specific task.

Next steps: This is where you add any next steps in your learning. Now that you possess this new information, what are you going to do with it? What more information do you need? How will your life be improved?
